If your car’s registration has expired in Louisville, you almost certainly do not need to renew it or pay back fees to donate it. With Bluegrass Auto Gift, what matters is that you have a valid Kentucky title in your name — not current tags. We’ll accept most vehicles with lapsed registration anywhere in Louisville Metro, from the Highlands, Shively, and Okolona to Jeffersontown and Prospect, and we’ll send a free tow truck so you never have to drive it.
Here’s how it works in Kentucky: when you donate, you’ll sign your Kentucky title over to Bluegrass Auto Gift. We arrange pickup at no cost to you, even if the car won’t start, has been sitting in the driveway off Preston Highway, or is parked at an apartment complex in St. Matthews. Once the tow driver collects it and the title is transferred, the vehicle becomes our responsibility. You should then notify the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet/Jefferson County Clerk of the transfer for your protection. You don’t have to stand in line to re-register, and you don’t pay past-due registration fees just to donate. You still receive a donation receipt for your federal tax deduction, and proceeds support Heritage for the Blind, a 501(c)(3) helping people who are blind or visually impaired.
How to get your free pickup scheduled
1. Confirm you have a valid Kentucky title in your name
Find your Kentucky vehicle title and make sure your name matches the current owner on record. Expired tags are fine; what matters is a clear, signed title without major alterations. If there’s a lien listed, check that it’s released. No need to visit the BMV to renew registration—this is strictly a title transfer for donation.
2. Tell us about your car with expired registration
Contact Bluegrass Auto Gift and let us know the basics: year, make, model, where it’s sitting in Louisville Metro, and that the registration is expired. Whether it’s in a Germantown driveway, a Newburg rental lot, or a Fern Creek street, we’ll verify it’s eligible and walk you through what’s needed based on your situation.
3. Schedule your free Louisville pickup (no driving needed)
You don’t have to risk driving on expired tags. We send a licensed tow truck at no cost to you anywhere in Louisville Metro and surrounding areas. The driver will meet you at home, work, or a storage lot, load the vehicle—even if it’s not running—and collect the signed title. You pay nothing for this service.
4. Sign the title and hand over the keys (if available)
At pickup, you’ll sign the Kentucky title over to Bluegrass Auto Gift according to state requirements. If you still have keys, great; if not, we can usually still accept the vehicle. Once the tow driver leaves with your car, it becomes our responsibility, not yours—even though the registration was expired.
5. Notify Kentucky of the transfer and keep your records
After pickup, you should notify the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet/Jefferson County Clerk that you donated the vehicle. This helps protect you from future tickets or tax notices. Keep a copy of the title transfer or donation documents for your records while we process the vehicle and prepare your tax receipt.
6. Receive your tax receipt and help Heritage for the Blind
Once your vehicle is sold or otherwise processed, Bluegrass Auto Gift sends you a donation receipt. For most cars, you can generally claim at least $500; higher values are documented on IRS Form 1098-C. Your gift supports Heritage for the Blind’s programs for people who are blind or visually impaired, right from Louisville.
Potential complications to watch for
Title missing or not in your name
Tip: Expired registration is usually fine, but we do need a valid title in the donor’s name. If the car is still titled to a family member, or the title is lost, call the Jefferson County Clerk or your county clerk to ask about a replacement or transfer. Once that’s fixed, we can usually schedule pickup quickly.
Active liens still showing on the Kentucky title
Tip: If your title lists a lienholder (like a bank or finance company) that was never properly released, it can slow things down. Try to locate a lien release letter or updated title, or contact the lender. We can explain what we need, but Kentucky won’t recognize the transfer if the lien is still technically open.
Car stored in a tow yard or apartment lot
Tip: If your expired-tag vehicle is in a Louisville impound, private tow yard, or a strict apartment parking lot, we may need extra permission to access it. Gather any storage or lot contact information, plus any paperwork or release forms, so our towing partner can coordinate removal without extra fees or delays to you.
Recent tickets or taxes connected to the car
Tip: Donating ends your responsibility going forward, but it doesn’t erase tickets or taxes issued before the donation. Check any notices from Louisville Metro or the state. After pickup, promptly notify the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet of the transfer date so future notices don’t come to you once we take possession.
